Access to affordable quality medicines –

Chemistry matters!

Rising health care costs and its burden on the patients and payers is a growing concern worldwide.  Pharmaceuticals account for a significant portion of these costs and hence this trillion-dollar industry is at the forefront of this debate. The industry has been evolving rapidly in the last three decades, aided by ever expanding robust global supply chain. The complexities associated with global supply chain necessitate focus on quality of the medicines and a meaningful regulatory framework. It also affects intellectual property rights and its enforcements. With rising costs throughout the supply chain, cost reduction without compromising quality has become an industry wide focus to ensure affordability of quality medicines.

Indeed, chemistry and chemists play an important role in addressing many facets of these issues. In this lecture I will be showcasing the role chemistry plays in this industry from many angles, particularly as it relates to access, affordability and quality.
